Meditation, especially mindfulness meditation, helps promote emotional health through good self-regulation. The ability to self- regulate saves us from being tossed to and fro by external influences, circumstances, and events. When we self-regulate well, we are better able to control the trajectory of our emotional lives and resulting actions based on our values and sense of purpose. There are three important components of self-regulation that have been proposed by researchers: emotional regulation, self-awareness, and attention control.
Emotional Regulation
Emotional regulation involves different strategies that help us navigate our emotional states. This regulation is a significant life skill, which helps us not only avoid acting on feelings rashly or dangerously but also motivate or encourage ourselves when we aren't feeling confident about our circumstances.
Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the ability to understand who you are as a person: your personality, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Self-aware people are able to live authentically, because they understand who they are in relation to themselves and others. They are also able to better understand others and how others respond to them.
Attention Control
Attention control is just how it sounds: the ability to control where you hold your attention. This seems simple, but is in fact very difficult. Our minds get distracted very easily without training and flit here and there throughout the day. Meditation practices help our brains learn to hold a steady focus on one thing for longer periods of time.
